Torture permanently damages normal perception of pain

Held alone in tiny, filthy spaces for weeks or months, sometimes handcuffed and blindfolded, prisoners of war suffer severe beatings, burns, electric shocks, starvation, and worse. New research shows that ex-prisoners of war continue to suffer from dysfunctional pain perception and regulation, likely as a result of their torture.
