A rare gene variant discovered is associated with an increased risk of developing schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and alcoholism, confirms new research. People with the variant are around 2 to 3 times more likely to develop schizophrenia or alcohol dependence, researchers report. The study is based on genetic analysis of 4,971 people diagnosed with one of the three disorders compared with 1,309 healthy controls.
